Miscellaneous Additives
Preservatives/Biocides
Most water-based coatings, particularly latex emulsions, are prone to bacterial attack while still wet in the can . The cellulostic thickeners and surfactants provide an excellent food source for bacteria, so antibacterial preservatives may be used to keep the product sterile. In the past, formaldehyde-based products were favored, but their potential toxicity to applicators and residual fumes have limited their use. Newer, non-formaldehyde based products have replaced them in most architectural latex coatings.
Mildewcides/Fungicides
Mildewcides (or fungicides) protect the dry coating film from the growth of mildew and are widely used in exterior and, in a lesser concentration, interior paints. In the past (pre-1990), mercury was the biocide and mildewcide of choice, but health concerns now limit its use. Non-mercurial organic-based alternatives have virtually replaced mercury now. |
