A little Color Terminology

Hue
  • full strength color
  • a general term used to distinguish one color from another
Tint
  • a light value of color made by adding white to the color
  • (e.g. - pink is a tint of red)
Tone
  • a graduation of color, either a hue, a tint, or a shade, as a gray tone
  • adding black and white to any color on the wheel creates a tone or grayed color
Chroma
  • intensity or depth of color
  • quality of a color that relates to its concentration
  • term is used to differentiate pure, intense colors from colors that are grayed.
Value
  • term used to distinguish dark colors from light ones
  • dark values are known as shades, light values as tints
  • lighter colors are indicated by numbers ranging above five, while darker ones are indicated by numbers below five.
Shade
  • degree of color obtained by adding black to a color or hue
  • a shade is darker (or lower) in value, e.g. brown is made from orange and a large quantity of black
Softer Color
  • less bright
  • created by adding a bit of black or gray
Lighter Color
  • created by adding white
Brighter Color
  • achieved by using more color
Warm Colors
  • reds, oranges, yellows, yellow-greens
  • seem to advance toward you, bring things nearer
  • to warm any color except green, add a little red
  • to warm green, add a little yellow
Cool Colors
  • blues, violets, blue-greens, and blue-grays, seem to retreat and push things away
  • some colors seem heavier than others
  • cool colors generally seem lighter than the warm ones
  • add a little blue to pink, green, or gray to cool
  • a very little green plus a touch of blue cools ivory, yellow, cream and tan
Color Harmony
  • combining two or more colors (according to certain rules) creates a harmony of color
Light Reflectance Value
  • dark colors soak up light as a sponge soaks up water
  • light tints serve as reflectors thus making the most of light
  • 1 - 4% (Black)
  • 70 - 90% (White)
