Learning Objectives:

In this module we will cover several aspects of color as it refers to paint & coatings.

  1. We’ll describe general information about the source of color and how color is seen by the human eye.
  2. We’ll discuss the theory of color:
    • a. The primary color system, etc.
      b. Dimensions of color.
      c. Systems developed to identify and measure color.
  3. We’ll also discuss how paint & coatings get their color
    • a. Pigments
      b. Tints
  4. We’ll describe the difference between gloss and light reflectance.
  5. Lastly we’ll discuss the psychology of color and how it affects humans.

Color

- "The selective reflection of light waves in the visible spectrum. Materials that show specific absorption of light will appear the color of the wavelength that they reflect." - MPI Glossary of Terms.

A practical knowledge of color is important in the various avocations of life. The possession of a keen sense of color increases intellectual and even the literary capacities of an individual. Color has a definite effect on emotions, and influences to a marked degree the health of an individual. Almost everything that man consumes, wears or enjoys is brought to his attention through the medium of color. Color communication between all types and fields of industry should be smooth and understandable.

sdgsdfgThe simplest way to study anything is to find its elements, essentials, or first principles. We will attempt to break it down into the easiest terms possible, so it will be easier to comprehend. There are three essential elements that enter into the phenomenon called color.

These are:

  • light - the illuminant, rays of visible radiant energy (sun, electric light, fire, etc.)

  • the object - the modifier of the light, the ability to absorb and reflect portions of the light.

  • the eye - the receiver or observer that focuses on the reflected light and, along with the brain, interprets the colors seen.
