Essentials of Paint & Paint Technology

This course is designed to provide information regarding paint technology, paint types, color, paint application, safety, basic specifications and environmental considerations. Each of the specific topics (or modules) listed above is discussed in detail and a summary and review test questions are included for each module.

Architectural Painting
This course describes the best practices for painting the 24 most common architectural substrates encountered in a newly built environment, including what flaws or conditions might be rectified prior to painting; which paint systems are commonly used for that substrate; how to evaluate the surface condition and how surface condition affects the surface preparation and paint system choice. It also includes surface preparation practices and techniques as well as basic quality assurance/inspection practices. Basic short specification writing is explored.
Maintenance Repainting

This course describes the best practices for painting the 24 most common architectural substrates encountered in a maintenance situation, including what flaws or conditions might be rectified prior to painting; which paint systems are commonly used for that substrate; how to evaluate the surface condition and how surface condition affects the surface preparation and paint system choice. It also includes surface preparation practices and techniques as well as basic quality assurance/inspection practices. Basic short specification writing is explored.

Inspection

Course content includes how to write detailed paint specs for either new or maintenance projects; using the gages and protocols required for inspection; how to document job quality and adherence to the specification; and how to identify potential problems before they become costly mistakes. Course is online plus a one-day hands-on session and final exam. Peer review allows the student to achieve “MPI Certified Coating Inspector” certification, and at the top level, the designation Master, Paint Quality Assurance.

General Introduction

These MPI courses were developed as a result of demand from paint manufacturers, painting contractors, suppliers and retailers, the Military and other government bodies requiring information and certification for their managers and supervisors, sales staff and customer service, property and facility managers, etc.

The MPI Training courses or modules contain a series of subjects (modules) and lessons (sections) that will lead to MPI certification at various levels. They are complex in nature but will be described and explained to the best of our ability so that you may comprehend the concepts. Each subject or module has its own "Study Questions" for students to judge their own progress within the course.

There are other learning opportunities and certificate levels – from the very basic understanding of paint & coatings to comprehension and use of the MPI Technical Manuals (MPI Architectural Painting Specification Manual and the MPI Maintenance Repainting Manual) to techniques of inspection for Quality Assurance or for defects and failures of architectural substrates.

The full certification course is aimed at Paint & Coating professionals who wish to progress toward the level of an MPI Certified Architectural Coating Inspector. Completion entails taking and passing the exams for all 4 levels, a peer review and a final proctored exam.
